It's no news that a good night's sleep is critical to maintaining good physical and mental health. Vital to our everyday performance, getting enough sleep aids brain function, helps us to keep our emotions in check, and reduces the risk of disease.
With it being more and more common for our ever-busy lifestyles to feed into our precious sleep time, it's never been more important to ensure that our sleep surroundings, including our beds, are right for us.
A study of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Silentnight, found that 60% of Brits currently feel robbed of a good night’s sleep, with the average adult waking three times a night and 84% of those who wake, struggling to drift back off.
Sleep loss can reportedly be attributed to temperature issues, noise levels, intruding light, a snoring partner, as well as stress levels and anxiety, but the study findings revealed that the main culprit for sleep loss is; people are sleeping on the wrong type of mattress, with 81% of people believing theirs isn't right for them.
The study, conducted via OnePoll, also highlighted the positive impact of feeling well-rested, including being in a better mood, feeling more energized, and being more productive.
Hannah Shore, sleep expert, and research manager at Silentnight, said: “Finding the right mattress for your unique sleep needs is incredibly important to ensure you’re getting the right level of support and getting the best quality of sleep.
“When we don’t get enough sleep, or have quality sleep, it can have such a huge knock-on effect for the following day. This is especially the case when you have a busy life with little 'me' time.”
“Sleep is such a huge part of our lives, and where we sleep makes a huge difference to how we sleep. It could be how your room is set up, the things you do in the space before going to bed, or quite simply the mattress you sleep on and how old it is," she added.
“In addition, shortage of sleep not only impacts productivity at work, performance at school and overall health, but also has a profound effect on our family life.”
According to Silentnight, too many of us are making do with a mattress that is not suited to our unique sleep needs, and seven out of ten people are sleeping on the wrong mattress. So, to help combat the issue as part of its 'Sleepunique®' campaign, the sleep-essentials company teamed up with the University of Central Lancashire to create the handy tool, Sleepunique®.
The tool uses body measurements and sleeping habits to recommend the perfect mattress, which allows customers to figure out the type of mattress and bed that is best for them, without having to test them out.
