Eagle-eyed Emmerdale viewers have expressed their fears that a "sinister" nurse could cause trouble for baby Evan. On Friday night's episode, Billy and Dawn Fletcher's heartbreaking ordeal with baby Evan continued.
Emmerdale couple Billy and Dawn were living life on cloud nine, having finalised their adoption of children Lucas and Clemmie and welcoming a baby boy, Evan, just before Christmas. But the couple are currently face every parent’s worst nightmare as little Evan has been sadly diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a devastating illness while affects around 10,000 people in the UK every year.
During Friday's episode, the couple were told about Evan's diagnosis before handing the baby over to a nurse for his first round of chemotherapy treatment. But concerned fans were quick to accuse the nurse of being "creepy" and speculated if she might end up being a "sinister" character.
Viewers rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to discuss whether others had noticed the nurse's unusually 'happy' face and question her intentions. One wrote: "That smiley nurse seems far too happy & gives off a weird creepy vibe." Another added: "The nurse is overplaying her part, way too much grinning." A third commented: "This nurse looks sinister to me."
While another fan agreed, writing: "That nurse is giving me the heebee jeebees with her rictus grin." Meanwhile one called it 'sinister', sharing: "Is that grinning lovely nurse going to turn out to be sinister? Would be something classy #Emmerdale would do."
Others shared how heartbroken they were for Billy and Dawn ahead of the heartbreaking storyline which is believed to focus on how the couple come to terms with the diagnosis and the toll of treatment. But it will also delve into the wider impact of how it affects the rest of their family and the people around them.
Ahead of the heartbreaking scenes unfolding on screen, Dawn’s actress Olivia Bromley said: “This is an incredibly challenging and heartbreaking story, but such an important story for Emmerdale to tell. I've learnt so much since working with Leukaemia Care and speaking to parents whose children have been diagnosed, and we want to not only raise awareness but to do justice to the experience of families who are blindsided by a diagnosis like this.”
She continued: “For Dawn and Billy, like many parents, Evan's diagnosis turns their world upside down so unexpectedly. It's been inspiring to hear the stories of strength, resilience and also to hear of the incredible NHS staff who do such invaluable work when parents' are at their lowest, so I hope we can also reflect this as we approach this storyline.”
Throughout the writing and filming process, help and guidance was sought from the charity Leukaemia Care. They are working closely with the Emmerdale production team on the storyline to ensure a realistic depiction of life with the illness, while also highlighting the different ways in which it may impact on families.
