When it comes to awards ceremonies, few are quite as prestigious as the Oscars, and whilst she might not have been nominated for an award, that didn’t stop Margot Robbie from going all out with her glam for the 2024 Academy Awards. With Barbie nominated in several different categories, the final leg in the film’s press tour saw Margot completed her series of doll-inspired looks in a black Versace sequin gown, natural-looking makeup, and – of course – her signature blonde locks.

Throughout the movie’s press tour, Margot has been working with hair colourist Jacob Schwartz to maintain her Barbie-blonde locks, with Jacob revealing her ‘spun with gold’ colour was thanks to a £10 hair dye you can do at home. The colourist used a combination of Schwarzkopf Igora Vibrance and BLONDME to create Margot’s golden tresses – and they’re both ultra-affordable.

Jacob said: “I am so honoured to have worked with Margot for this amazing Barbie press run, culminating with tonight’s Oscars. I continued to use the same formula as the Golden Globes using my Spun with Gold technique to create her signature sparkling blonde. Schwarzkopf Igora Vibrance always delivers an Oscar’s performance with their unparalleled colour deposit.”

To get the look, he created Margot’s highlights using a combination of Schwarzkopf BLONDME Premium Lightener 9+, £22.96 here (was £32.50), and BLONDME Premium Developer 10 Volume. For her balayage ends, he combined the same Premium Lightener 9+ with Schwarzkopf’s 30 volumed Premium Developer, £15.49 here, with Jacob revealing that he added a ¼ oz of Olaplex No.1 to both bleach solutions to help prevent breakage and damage.

Olaplex No.1 is sadly only available at salons – and we do recommend a good colourist if you’re planning a dramatic hair makeover! However, there are plenty of other Olaplex treatments that you can add to your haircare routine to help protect it from bleach damage and repair breakage, with Jacob also applying the salon-only Olaplex No.2 as a 10 minute stand alone treatment to Margot’s hair after rinsing

Next, he applied Schwarzkopf’s Igora Vibrance No. 7-0 Medium Blonde, £9.99 here (was £12.70), and the Igora Vibrance Activator Gel in 6 volume on her damp roots for 10 minutes, before toning the middle section. For her mid-lengths, Jacob used Igora Vibrance in 9-0, 9-4 and 8-46 and the 6 volume activator gel for the last five minutes, before using Igora Vibrance 9-0 and 9-1 around Margot’s hairline to frame and brighten her face.

Finally, in the last three minutes he lifted up the ends and rinsed with shampoo and conditioner to create the brighter, lighter tips. If that all sounds more than a little complicated to you, you can always ask your go-to stylist to replicate the process to create some Barbie-worthy blonde locks! But if you’re a DIY hair queen, this is the exact recipe for Margot’s ‘spun with gold’ style.
